Blog Terms In true spirit of the blog basics series – I’ve investigate much information on sites and thought back to when I began blogging and if I would interpret the information correctly. I noticed from when I started blogging to now the list of blog terms out there have really grown. However – for a new blogger, less then a 1/4 of the terms out there are important for you to know. I’ve compiled a basic but essential list below… Blogosphere:The term used to describe all blogs or the entire blogging community worldwide Blog Site:The location on the web that a blog is placed, it can either be a stand alone blog, or a blog that is placed within a website Blogroll:The list of blogs that a blogger will add to there site. This list can be titled blogroll or whatever the blogger decides, i. e.: recommended reading, links, Blogs I Like, etc… The list may consist of any web/blog site that the blogger decides. Blog Carnival:It is basically when somebody takes a given blog post or topic and compiles all posts they find about that topic into one post called a carnival. A blog carnival can be updated and have contributors that update new material. Blog Carnivals help bloggers recognize each others efforts, organize important topics, and promote conversation on the blogosphere Categories:Categories is a way to organize your blog entries under a topic. When a user selects the category of their choice a list of all blog entries under that category will appear. Comment Spam:As usual spam is a pain in the @%*!. Comment spam is no different. It usually consists of a few lines and a link to another site. Most blog software has spam plug ins the help control comment spam. This allows readers to be notified whenever there favorite blogs are updated with more content to read. RSS Feed:This is the file that contains the latest blog post which appears in the RSS aggregator/reader. Reciprocal Link:When two bloggers exchange links with each other on their blogroll. Sidebar:The column or columns that are found on the sides of most blogs. The sidebar may contain archives, blogroll, advertising, most popular posts, etc… Trackback:A mechanism that lets bloggers see who wrote the original post and who has written posts about that original post. The mechanism pings each blog alerting them that this has happened. Tag:A tag is keywords used in association with the content on a website, bookmark, photo or blog post.
